Booklist │ Dealing With... Set 2

by Beth McGuire, Booklist

The Dealing With . . . series will appeal to middle-grade audiences, parents, and caregivers who want to learn more about how to navigate challenging situations. Each book consists of five chapters that help readers identify and understand the issue at hand, implement self-care practices, and find ways to “take control” (six targeted strategies are offered). Difficult People examines the concepts of aggression, self-awareness, and triggers and encourages readers to stand up for themselves. Discrimination tackles bias, equality, and
stereotypes, while emphasizing that friends are a valuable support system. Coping, resilience, and validation are highlighted in Family Changes, which suggests following routines during tumultuous times. Health Issues presents many categories of health conditions (e.g., illness, medical disorders, injury), and it reminds readers to celebrate their successes when living with health challenges. Each book has a section of scenarios for which readers must select the best actions to address the problem. Reader engagement is also encouraged through periodic “What Do You Think?” questions, which can act as a springboard for discussions. Other features include stock photos, informational sidebars, graphic aids, extension activities, a glossary, and additional resources, including phone help lines to offer support to readers feeling isolated. Teachers and counselors who work with students experiencing the difficulties discussed in the series will find these books a helpful resource.
