Reviews and Awards for A Career in Architectural Design

"From the Art and Design Careers series (8 titles), this attractive volume begins with several fictional scenes: Jasmine and her classmates arrive at one of America’s most famous buildings, Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built into a waterfall. During their tour, it occurs to Jasmine—who loves to draw—that some artistic people design houses for a living and that she wants to become one of them. The book introduces a wide variety of related topics that architects and architectural students must consider. These include the building’s foundation, structure, and intended purpose. Architects confer with their clients, but they also confer with engineers to assure their buildings’ structural integrity. Coffelt advises young, aspiring architectural designers to play Minecraft, reflecting that it is training a new generation, just as Legos did for a previous generation of architectural designers. While the text jumps topic to topic, the engaging writing, the use of color photos, and the book's design elements make each page turn an invitation to consider another element or challenge within architectural design.

"Gr 7-10–This series introduces readers to a variety of creative careers, showing what each profession involves and how to get started. Each book begins with a short fictional story in which a character is unexpectedly introduced to the featured career, offering a relatable entry point for readers. The narrative then shifts to explain what professionals in the field do, highlighting real-life examples, well-known figures, and notable designs. These references make the content more engaging and help readers connect the profession to people or work they may recognize. The books also outline steps for pursuing the career, including relevant schooling, internships, and specific programs or institutions to explore. The writing is clear and engaging, and the graphics include backgrounds with overlapping splashes of color, abundant photos, and color accents. VERDICT: These titles are good introductions to creative careers and suitable for collections needing resources on this topic." --School Library Journal, November 1, 2025
